With internal hard drives reaching more than a terabyte of capacity and 500 gb external hard drives becoming a standard people would think there is really no need for an external hard drive, they might be expensive and an inconvenience to use anyway, and they would be very wrong too. An internal hard drive holds everything there is on your personal computer but would you rely keeping everything on a single drive? I wouldn’t either, and that’s why I think external hard drives are brilliant.
There is no need taking off the cover these little aluminum or plastic cases can be connected to just about any computer around the world since USB became a widely accepted standard and these devices are able to connect through USB, even using the 2.0 standard for 60 megabytes/second blazing fast connectivity. Some are still running on FireWire but I would just skip getting them altogether, because not many computers have access to FireWire Macs aside.
For everyone who uses their computer a way to store and backup data safely has become mandatory as people tend to have everything in digital form only from unreproducible family photos to files they need at work and are costly and hard to recover. A 500gb external hard drive is a really convenient way of backing up data as there is not much to do in terms of assembly work. You connect it to the power adapter if it has one, then connect it to the usb port and find the volume under the operating system. Recent operating systems are all able to read any usb external disk drive without any drivers installed prior to connecting the unit.
Some manufacturers even pack a data backup software with every hard drive they sell, but even if they don’t it’s still really simple to drag and drop folders you need to the external drive. If you think it’s not, just remember what we all had to do to archive data to CD putting them into the writer one by one, and if one of them were scratched we could go on and try to polish it to get the data back.
These drives easily can be used instead of USB thumb drives too, they’re faster, can hold much more data and are just as easily portable. There are a few downsides, like the total price is always higher and physical size is bigger than of a thumb drive, but relatively still a better choice to transfer data. With an USB HDD taking 15 versions of a movie you’re cutting on your home computer to a friend to show him where you are at with the work. Simply copy the files in a few minutes, disconnect the drive, put it into your backpack and connect it again when you are in front of his computer.
A 500gb external hard disk drive can hold up to 120,000 mp3 songs or 110 DVD discs and costs about as much as an internal hard drive would part you with. An average unit costs about $70 to $100 and is easily obtainable through amazon.com or newegg.com
