The Acer Atom Notebook line went from zilch to famous in a hit under the name Aspire One. There are many different variations of this series, so you need to take a look at the individual models to be able to tell the difference.

The AO532h is not unlike many other notebooks with Pine Trail Atom processor. This particular one comes with N450, which is no new technology, but by far is the best if you’re focused on battery life.

The processor runs at 1.66GHz with 512KB L2 cache, and runs 64 bit operating systems thanks to the added instruction set. The performance is similar to that of an N280, which is about as fast as an older single core mobile Pentium on half frequency. Not too fast, but you’ll have no problem watching YouTube videos.

Acer Aspire One AO532The battery is claimed to have a capacity up to 10 hours, I’d say that’s going to plateau at about 7-8 hours under normal circumstances and Wi-Fi switched on. The model comes with 250GB HDD, quite a nice sight amongst the sea of 160GB models. It isn’t much of a difference compared to for example the hp atom notebook, but may be an edge for some.

The screen is 10.1″, with LED back light, nothing new above the competition here. This screen has been used for quite some time now and based on my personal experience with a similar one in my Asus all I can say is to see it for yourself. You should see any notebook during operation before you buy it anyway.

There is something to note about the outer casing and the keyboard though. My personal and therefore subjective opinion is that the keyboard could be better. It looks just like any other notebook keyboard only smaller, if you take a look at Asus’ or HP’s solutions you’ll see why I prefer those. Women or people with small fingers would have no problem operating the device though, again, take the time and visit a computer store to see it for yourself.

The casing comes in three colors, red, onyx blue and silver. The usual black and white options are omitted for a reason or another, I’d choose the blue as that’s the closest to black but the other two are elegant enough for anyone to show up with the netbook.

The processor supports 2GB memory, so if you were thinking about upgrading the default 1GB you have to know about this limitation, the motherboard also has 1 slot so it’s an additional 1GB or nothing.

  1. 10 hours of battery life does seem like a bit of an embellishment…but that would be nice!

  2. Yeah, manufacturers tend to slightly overestimate the battery performance but I wouldn’t be shocked if 10 hours in their books turned out to be 7+ under normal circumstances.
