Hard drives are delicate pieces of hardware and everyone has at least one hdd failure coming towards them. You have either lost a hard drive or are in for one dead drive.
Hard disk drives operate by moving a receptive head over a spinning set of disks that hold data in magnetic state of a given spot. The head reads this as the spot, sector or block, moves along under it. If this process is disrupted in any way your files may seem to be lost. Data recovery experts can get your things back for a rather spicy fee, but if you have no backup of your important files you’ll have no options but to get your wallet.
Every case is different and there are no two identical hard disk problems. There are approximate numbers based on the cause of the problem though. The two most often occurring reason for data loss in hard disk drives is disk failure and deleted data.
The first is an inherent risk and can happen to anyone. If dusk gets into the drive somehow it can clog up the head and make reading impossible. Experts can clean it up in a clean room and give your files back.
When the electronics fail and refuse to move the head and interpret data coming from it you are back to square one again, the drive appears dead and you need to contact an expert.
If it is a laptop hard drive there is another common case. It is when the head hits the spinning disk and damages the surface due to a shock to the laptop computer or accidental dropping can lead to the same thing.
Hardware related problems may cost you $400 to $500 dollars on average. For more complicated problems you can expect to pay in the thousands.
Another common problem occurring in data storage is software related. If you delete your files they are most probably still present physically on the disk but you are unable to recover them. There are different pieces of software available to get your data back but I wouldn’t recommend using them.
If you can’t get your data back you will have to contact an expert anyway and if they spot that you have tried to repair the file system yourself they may raise fees, or skip the case. The normal fee for software related data recovery start at $150 but depending on the complexity of the problem it may be substantially higher. In case of raid crash in servers it is going to be in the thousands.
When you’re looking for a data recovery service always choose one that gives you warranty for recovering data. You may see it advertised as no fix no fee, a similar solution to what lawyers claim when they advertise no win no fee.
Before giving green light to the job always ask for a written quote. The company should be able to come up with a calculated price upon examination that you should be aware of. It both spares you unpleasant surprises and protects you from being overcharged.
