Computer towers are encasing internal parts of a desktop computer. They call them towers due to their relative height to the width and depth. A computer can be made of various materials but stainless steel and sheet aluminum are the two most common variations. Stainless steel gives the tower rigidity and a general feel of quality as well as making it a rather robust construction. Aluminum on the other hand is easier to work with and is a lighter metal, that’s why manufacturers chose this for designer type or fancier looking variations.
External size is not everything a computer tower has to offer to confuse you. Their internal building and organization determines whether your motherboard fits it or not. Most commonly used form factor is ATX and its cropped variation mATX. There are mATX towers available on the market but all ATX cases are able to accommodate it thanks to matching position of mounting holes.
Once you’ve found out which type your motherboard is, it is time to hunt down the right size tower for your desktop computer. Things to look for are number of hard disk drive and optical drive bays. You should also make sure the power supply is included with the house, or can take yours without problems. Before buying you can ask these, the shop selling these cases should be very well educated on all the questions you could possibly ask, so don’t worry, if you don’t understand something, just ask. The outer shape and color is entirely up for taste, I wouldn’t buy one that has many little pieces that can break and fall down including little doors on plastic hinges.
Be aware of the following:
-There happen to be sharp edges inside, don’t cut yourself
-Same can be said to rear of the case.
-There should be no bends and dents on the case, if you encounter something like that, ask for replacement
-Don’t settle with a house that has scratched or patchy paint job
-Dents are mainly caused by shipping but you shouldn’t be taking any responsibility for lack of due care. Don’t buy a damaged case.
A normal computer case can cost you anything between 30 and 300 bucks, so don’t be shocked if you see a price tag of $269. Lian li and Chieftec are two manufacturers that take quality seriously, so you can see some prices on their computer towers. You should also be aware of Casetek, Cooler Master and Aopen, those guys also make some fine quality PC towers. Chieftec also manufactures quality power supplies, you can have a peace of mind with any of their recent models.
