Mini Notebook Computer
You might have heard about netbooks, they’ve been coming from all media lately. Some may still be wondering if they are good for anything at all, and I’m going to shed some light on them.
Netbooks are small form factor laptops that are designed mainly for browsing online content, but they don’t run out of steam even if you try to play movies, or even some lighter games on them. There are people who buy their netbooks then cast a low rating through the webshop’s form. They usually do that, because the device doesn’t do what they thought it will, in other words, it doesn’t live up to their expectations.
It is only normal that a computer fails to do so if the expectations are not based on actual knowledge. Buying a $300 notebook seems like a good deal for those who don’t know that these are a bit slower than other models. Even if you do know what to expect, a computer of this sort can be and often is a good deal, just put it to its rightful place.
A particular model grabbed my attention the other day, when I was trying to find out what to replace my current netbook with. The one I have right now is the Asus 1005HA with the smaller battery, so it runs only for 6.5 hours if I turn in wi-fi and 7.5 if I turn it off.
It’s been serving me for 6 months as a main computer and I’ve got to say that it has surprised me many times during that time. I expected it to browse the net and let me check MSN and that’s it. Then I started working on several design projects and though I had some hard time when I had to edit large pictures, due to the 10″ screen it always got the job done.
I’m the first to say that they’re not made for heavy computing. They’re just not strong enough to play 1080 pixel HD videos, and I had to give up WoW for a while. I’m glad I did, though, since I’m as productive without being sucked into Azeroth as I never was. It really skyrocketed my productivity, and not only because it cut me off my wow addiction, but it lets me do stuff while on the go.
I found out that I can get more work done when I’m not at home, so I just basically charge my netbook while I’m having a shower and make a couple sandwiches, shut it closed, and put it in my laptop sleeve. Then I go to a nearby park, or hop on the bus and circle around until I find a spot I like. The thing I really like is that the netbook I have now runs longer on a single charge than I do, I never hit rock bottom on battery since I do this.
Another model I was looking at to possibly change this computer to is the ASUS Eee PC 1005PE-PU27.It is basically the same thing, with the awesome keyboard, so that I can go on typing on it without having to readjust. I must say that the keyboard in these “seashell” Asus EEE pcs are of great quality. When I was using a desktop computer I had several keyboards, mostly for gaming though, but they were not as good as this one.
I even had Logitech at one point and I would never go back to that. Not because I don’t like their stuff, they are awesome for WoW, but this one allows me to type 20% faster. Maybe I’m used to it, maybe it’s something else, the point is that I can work for 8 hours without feeling side effects. I just stand up every hour to walk a little and that’s it. It’s that good.
So the 1005PE-PU27 from Asus really got me thinking. It is virtually the same thing with a few modifications. First of all, it has better battery life. It comes down to the fact that Intel has reviewed their former N270 processor and made one that is smaller and less hungry. They also put a graphic chip and a memory controller right into it so they could further reduce power consumption.
It means that the performance stayed virtually the same, but the thing runs for 14 hours on a single charge now. We all know that all manufacturers like to ’round up’ their numbers, so I did some extra researc and found out that they indeed have, but not as much as I thought they would. It reportedly runs for 12 hours on a single charge which basically blows everything else out of the water.
12 hours of productivity means that I could either charge it full, and go on for the whole day without having to plug it in at least once, or optionally I could just throw it on for 30 minutes to charge it a little, and it could get me through most of the day. Both are really attracting which makes me think that in the near future I might as well change my current 1005HA to this 1005PE.
I would have a brand new computer that is even better, and for something around $330 I don’t think I can get better for word processing than that.
