Xp Laptops – A dying breed

Xp laptops are a dying species in 2010. There are still a few around to keep backward compatibility and to keep costs low, but not for long I would say. Since Microsoft released Vista, there has been an ongoing effort on part of notebook manufacturers to finally get rid of windows xp from their laptops. It has been serving for 10 long years and now it is really time to introduce some new features, mostly in the fields of security and energy management. Xp has come short during the last few years in both fields, and it would be strange if it didn’t. Manufacturers have been pushing the limits, just take a look behind, in 2000 when xp was released the most powerful computer was a P II perhaps and laptops were astronomically expensive.

xp laptopEons have passed in computer technology, and windows xp laptops have to go. They have done their part and it was nice to have them around but let’s give some space to the new kid around the block, Windows 7 to prove its worth. And there is lot of proving should be going on after the ugly mishap called vista.

There are still xp laptops being sold and their market is the ultra portable or so called netbook segment. Netbooks are somewhat limited on raw power and memory, and that is where xp can come handy. 10 years of optimization and can be streamlined to cause no disturbance with these small laptop computers. Most of them are very capable of running windows 7 home, I’ve proven that on my own netbook, but xp still has its advantages in a few cases. Like there is no aero glass surface to compute, and no excessive file system indexing going on.

I personally like my netbook with 7, but if I were to buy a new mini for my parents I’d go for xp. Why? They know how to use it, they’ve grown to know how it works, though Windows 7 is simple as a stone axe, elderly people still hate any kind of change and they should not be stressed any more than having to use computer for everyday work anyway.

Xp laptop deals are not hard to come by, but there is a sure sign of declining in market share, so if you would like to buy one, do it now, because later you most probably will have a harder time finding one you like.
